Red letter day for Cove as Alan signs on Print
Cove Rangers have swooped to snap up out-of-contract defender Alan Redford from Huntly. The centre half agreed terms with the Toonsers last night after turning out in a bounce match for the Rainbow Taxis Park side.

It was reported earlier in the year that Redford had agreed a new contract with Huntly but that was not the case and he was free to leave in the summer. Despite John Teasdale's efforts to keep him on board with the Black and Golds and an offer from at least one other Highland League club, Redford has pledged his future to Cove.

Redford had an injury-ravaged first half to the season but still managed to clock up 1301 minutes of action for Huntly having made his return to the squad after the turn of the year. Speaking to http://www.highlandleague.net/ about his club's latest capture, Cove co-manager Kevin Tindal said:

"Alan played for us in a bounce game. We spoke to him after the game and he has agreed to join us. We are obviously delighted to get an experienced defender in. We were looking to strengthen defensively this summer and have already brought in young Stephen Jaffrey. Alan will give good competition for places at the back along with the other lads and that is hopefully going to improve us for next season.

"Neil Cruickshank is away on his travels now and that is a loss. We basically had myself along with a back four left and that is not a enough strength in depth. However, we have brought Alan in along with young Jaffa and that has given us that wee bit more competition in there and we are looking forward to the season starting now."

The Toonsers have been gearing up for their first pre-season fixture of the season when they visit Tindal's former club Arbroath on Saturday but like most other Highland League clubs, holidays have prevented Cove from having all of their squad together for any significant length of time. Tindal revealed:

"We have boys on holiday as always at this time of the year. We will have to chop and change things and ask some boys to play out of position to do a job. It is more important to get the running stages over with now though and we are getting down to using the ball and building the shape of the team.

"We will be concentrating on that more than anything and trying to get the 90 minutes of fitness. You can do all the running you want but you don't build your fitness up for the start of the season until you get into the games. That is what we are focussing on just now and the results aren't too important - as long as the performances are up there."

Redford is in contention to make his first appearance in a Cove shirt in that game at Gayfield on Saturday, where the kick off is scheduled for 3.00 pm.
