Carrol: Played a lot of good stuff / Jack: Lacking confidence Print
Buckie Thistle started the preparations for their defence of the Highland League championship with a comfortable 3-1 success over Third Division side Elgin City at Victoria Park.

New signings Michael Morrison, Brian Bell and Darren Wood were all involved for the Jags while boss Gregg Carrol also gave a run out to trialist striker Andrew Gardiner who impressed as a second half substitute.

Craig MacMillan put the home side in front before Zander Sutherland lashed in a second for Buckie. Craig Gunn halved the deficit from the penalty spot for Elgin after Neil Davidson had handled a David Niven effort but Lewis MacKinnon headed in Buckie's third of the night to secure the win.

After the match, Steven Rattray spoke to both managers for http://www.highlandleague.net/ as they reflected upon their first pre-season matches of the summer.

Snippets: I thought our players were good tonight. We had boys like Robbie Brown, Dave MacRae and Spider (Graeme Stewart) missing so it was good to see other boys on the park. We played a lot of good stuff and I am happy with that.

You can only play with what you have got and the most important thing for us was the play the players we had there tonight and I thought we were comfortable. The penalty changed the game a wee bit but I thought we got the ball down and played and I thought our fitness levels were absolutely fantastic and that is what you are looking at in your very first pre-season game.

Snippets: (I was looking for) more than what we got to be honest. I was disappointed with the performance. I thought Buckie played well but the wind was a major factor in the game although it was the same for both teams. We didn't look confident at all but there were boys playing out of position and we were five or six short from the starting eleven but I am sure Buckie can point to boys missing as well. Let's make mistakes now and get it out of the system and the players know they let themselves down. It's pre-season, it's early doors and we will get it sorted out.
