SS Huntly stay afloat to plot a course for Montrose Print
After last weekends Aberdeenshire Cup Final defeat, Huntly bounced back with a Scottish Cup 1st Round win over junior side Girvan writes Grant Turner. Dave McGinlay made four changes from last week's defeat with Ross Bremner returning in goal, Neil Reid starting at full back, Colin Robertson in for the injured Craig Dorrat and Bruce Cormie given a start in place of Michele Lombardi.

Cormie had the first chance of the game heading over from Colin Robertson's corner while at the other end; Ross Bremner managed a solid block against Darren Mitchell. Brems then launched Huntly back on the attack and Michael Ewen saw a shot fly just wide of the upright from the keeper's big hoof.

The deadlock was broken on ten minutes with Stuart Soane starting the move playing in Michael Ewen on the right wing, Ewen's cross was dropped by keeper Stuart Leavy and Soane reacted quickest to prod the ball in for his first goal for the club.

Moments later, Kris Mitchell curled a free kick over the Huntly wall but only to see his effort hit the side netting and then David McVittie broke into the Huntly area on 17 minutes but a timely tackle by Soane denied the winger as Girvan looked for an early leveller.

Michael Ewen looked to turn provider again on 21 minutes and his cross flicked off the head of Bruce Cormie into the path of Richard Craig who blasted against the side netting.

The last effort of the half saw the returning Bremner was called into action again on 35 turning behind skipper Darren Mitchell's shot behind for a corner.

Half-Time: Huntly 1 Girvan 0

There was panic six minutes after the break when Neil Reid's back header played in Michael Moffat.  The midfielder cutting in from the left but he drilled the ball across the face of goal to the relief of Reid.

Just after the hour mark, Michael Morrison headed over from Michele Lombardi's corner as the tempo slowed and the fans had to wait until the 75th minute for the next effort with Girvan playmaker Kevin Biggart firing wide after Michael Moffat wriggled clear of Neil Reid.

Two minutes later, Stuart Soane's cross into the back post was met by a Mike Ewen bullet header and he forced keeper Leavy to dive low and gather. Looking to double their lead the Black and Golds came close again on 79 minutes when Michael Morrison's header landed on the roof of the net from Michele Lombardi's corner.

With nine minutes to go, Girvan very nearly forced a replay. The ball was played to David McVittie who crashed a shot off the foot of the post and with Bremner beaten, it broke to sub Steven Shankland who somehow fired wide with the goal at his mercy.

Huntly's reward is a second round tie away to third division Montrose on October 25th.
