Scorries denied historic win as Brechin grab a replay Print
Wick Academy will travel to Brechin next weekend knowing exactly what is at stake following Monday's Scottish Cup 4th round draw, however the Scorries could and probably should have already been booked into the next round after a superb display of attacking football unsettled the Second Division side.

Wick were in the lead early on after a series of passes down the right culminated in a Richard Macadie flick back into the path of David Allan and he kept his fine scoring run intact with a left footed finish.

Brechin levelled in the 12th minute when a cross from the left was knocked down by Kris Renton and Charlie King drove the ball past Alan Bokas from 14 yards.  Jim Duffy's men then went in charge six minutes later when Andrew Macleod's efforts to keep the ball in play lead to him being dispossessed by Rory McAllister.  One former ICT man then delivered the ball to another, Kevin Byers, who slid in to place it under the keeper at the far post.

Wick refused to buckle and it could have been 2-2 when a good ball out of defence found Richard Macadie and he fed in Davie Allan.  The striker and keeper Craig Nelson both met the ball at the same time and Allan very nearly managed to quickly nudge the loose ball goalwards, however he was unable to get any real direction on it as he fell to the deck.

Young Alan Farquhar was beginning to take control of the middle of the park, breaking up the play and starting the passes and it was from one of his build ups, involving Gary Manson and Richard Macadie that Wick got the fans back into the game.  Davie Allan's effort may have trundled wide but he was soon to make amends.

In the 42nd minute Allan turned provider when he played through Sam Mackay, who had came in from the left to try a central berth briefly, and the former Brora Rangers skipper managed to force the ball home.

Just before the break Wick were incredibly 3-2 ahead.  Macadie played the ball through and while the Brechin defenders stood waving at the linesman David Allan raced through to find the net.

Half Time: Wick Academy 3 Brechin City 2

Just before the hour mark a typically intricate but incisive Wick passing display at the edge of the box lead to David Allan breaking into the area only for Craig Nelson to whip the striker's legs away.  Sam Mackay took the responsibility of the spot kick and duly fired it to the keeper's right to give the Scorries a two goal advantage.

Richard Macadie was taking centre stage at this point and after some lightning quick passes the Player of the Year played the ball across to Stevie Cunningham whose first time volley flew just over the bar.

Wick looked good value for the win at this point but goals change games and Rory McAllister managed to fire a ball into the net with the aid of a slight nick off a defender to give Brechin hope in the final fifteen minutes.

The Second Division side, realising they were set to be dumped out of the cup, put as much pressure as they could on the home defence and in the end they got their reward wich, four minutes from time, Charlie King drove home a leveller to set up a replay at Glebe Park next Saturday.

The overwhelming feeling was one of pride and frustration as the home fans, players and committee left knowing they deserved to be through, a sentiment echoed by Brechin boss Jim Duffy.
