A point apiece in Harmsworth stalemate Print
Wick Academy and Nairn County battled out a 0-0 draw as both sides took a point in their respective battles to climb up the Highland League table. It was a case of defences on top at Harmsworth Park and when either side did get through on goal, the found the opposition goalkeeper to be an impenetrable barrier.

In what was a hastily-arranged game after their fixtures at Rothes and Strathspey Thistle respectively were postponed, it was the hosts who were first to threaten as David Allan won the ball into the middle of the park on 13 minutes.

The striker cut it back to Richard MacAdie and the Highland League Player of the Year's cross was cleared to Gary Manson. The full back clipped the ball back into the danger area for Craig Shearer but his glancing header from 12 yards brushed the post as it went past the goal.

Wick's Alan Farquhar then won possession out on the right touchline and his low cross found Allan but the former Ross County and Elgin City forward's low effort was deflected away for a corner.

Nairn's best chance of the game came on 41 minutes when Martin MacDonald headed just over at the near post from a corner on the left.

Nairn started the second half on the front foot. Tony Low laid a pass into the path of steven mackay and his low ball found into Shaun Kerr's feet. The striker played the ball onto Gregg Main but his low shot from the right edge of the box was just wide of the ‘keeper's left hand post.

Just three minutes later, Kerr got the better of Andrew Macleod but his shot was parried away by the returning James More before the ball was cleared away.

The first Wick chance of the second half came after 56 minutes. Shaun Sinclair played in Farquhar down the right and the young midfielder turned on the byline before cut the ball back to Stevie Cunningham but his low shot went across the face of goal and wide.

On 70 minutes, Low split the Wick defence to find Mackay but his left-footed shot was over the bar when he could have taken another touch before shooting.

Stewart Ross played along diagonal ball into the Nairn box just a minute later and Manson rose highest but his header was caught comfortably by Ally Ridgers to his left.

Wick could have taken the lead on 73 minutes when substitute Gary Weir played a square ball to Cunningham, who then knocked it into the path of Allan. Wick's top scorer sprinted past his marker but could only shoot straight at Ridgers.

Manson then lost the ball out on the left after 76 minutes when he was tackled by Low. The winger cut in to the edge of the box and his low shot was deflected for a corner.

Nairn's last chance of the game fell the way of Low again on 86 minutes but this time his low effort was parried by More and the goalkeeper gathered at the second attempt.

Wick had one last chance on 89 minutes when Weir split the visiting defence to find Allan but his shot was blocked by Ridgers. The rebound fell to substitute Ross Allan but he curled his effort just wide of the top corner.
