Rothes and Forres Mechanics meet one another in the first round of the HITS North of Scotland Cup tomorrow evening the respective clubs' managers have been busy agreeing terms with trialists so they are able to play in the tie. Competition rules state that only signed players are permitted to play in the Cup and even though trialists are free to play in league games, with the North Cup coming first this year, both managers have looked to tie up those who have caught the eye. Starting with visitors Forres, the Fosters Highland League Cup holders have fielded Garry Tweedie, Scott Lawrie and Chris Grant in their pre-season friendly fixtures. Although the latter two are still free agents, manager Charlie Rowley was eager to get Tweedie's name on a contract to enable him to turn out tomorrow. The Can Cans boss - who will be presiding over his first competitive game in charge - spoke to http://www.highlandleague.net/ after agreeing a one-year deal with the striker and said: "We have had six pre-season friendlies and Garry has been impressive throughout and certainly excelled in a couple of games. He struck up a good partnership early on with Kyle Scott in the Ross County game and he brings us a bit of strength as well. "He looked to be a real goal threat and although his fitness is a bit of an issue at the moment, we can work on that. It wasn't the sort of opportunity we could turn our noses up at. Because he is in the RAF, he can only play as an amateur so he was available for nothing and we are hopeful that it will turn out to be an excellent bit of business." It is the striker's second spell at Forres with his first ending in the infamous Tweedie-gate affair where the Can Cans had to replay a home game against Rothes as they had illegally fielded the forward in the original match. Ironically, Tweedie went on to turn out for the Speysiders at the start of last season after a brief stint at Elgin City and he looks set to start on his return to MacKessack Park tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Can Cans have lost young winger David Chambers as he has returned to Inverness CT on a full time contract now that they have reinstated their under-19s side. Rowley is not the only boss who has been busy typing up new players prior to tomorrow evening's tie with Rothes securing the services of attacking midfielder Joe Gerry and bringing Stephen Fraser in on loan from Elgin City. Gerry scored the opener for the Speysiders in their 1-1 friendly draw with Hermes earlier this month but another trialist who featured in that match Stuart Massie has been unable to agree a deal in time to feature in this tie. Boss Graham McBeath told http://www.highlandleague.net/: "Joe Gerry is signed up in time to play but Stuart Massie hasn't signed a form yet so he won't be involved on Wednesday. Joe is in contention to be involved with the squad and we have also taken a young lad Stephen Fraser in on loan from Elgin City. He featured at the weekend so he will be in contention for the tie having done really well in the two games he has played so far. Barry Massie is fully fit now and trained on Monday night. He got a run out on Saturday so I would expect him to be fighting for a starting berth on Wednesday. He will definitely be in the squad." |
